Coaching FAQ

How is Life Coaching different from therapy... or just talking to a friend?

Life Coaching is not therapy. Coaches are not counselors, psychologists, or psychiatrists. Coaches won't be working with you on issues from your past. Coaches focus on your goals for the future. If you have items from your past such as trauma or addictions that still plague you, Coaches will refer you to a mental health professional for counseling. Coaches are specialists that can help you grow personally and professionally.

Life Coaches are not your friends, but are very passionate about helping you to be successful. Coaches are objective. Coaches are not afraid of you firing them if you don't like what we have to say. Coaches are going to be honest with you and hold you accountable for the goals that you set in your time together.

If there is a gap between where you are NOW and where you WANT TO BE, a Coach is going to help you find paths and build new bridges to your goals. A Coach will give you support, discipline, and structure.

Are you accepting clients?

I'm not accepting clients at this time. I typically work with individuals on a pro-bono or barter basis based upon need as a way to give back to communities that have supported me. I am disabled, and my time and energy are limited. I devote my energy to broader audiences with speaking engagements and writing as I am able. I am always happy to answer quick questions or speak to your group about a variety of subjects.

How long should I work with a Life Coach?

It depends. Everyone's situation is unique and we all learn and grow at our own paces. I recommend four coaching sessions, or a month of coaching. You will walk away from every coaching session with action steps, and it is up to you to do the work! Meeting with a coach is a guaranteed way to hold yourself accountable because it raises the stakes. Suddenly, you aren't just doing it for yourself. You are doing it to show your coach that you are working on the plan you developed together.

Can I hire a Life Coach for a short-term goal or project?

Absolutely! If you are focusing on a big decision or a singular life event, a Life Coach is perfect! Often  clients hire coaches for one goal or dream, and then continue working with them as they see new opportunities for change and growth!

Do Coaches accept long-term clients?

Of course! We don't always know what we want right now. If you are deciding on a path in life, the process may be on-going. Coaches will work with you until you say you are ready to move on without them.

Is Life Coaching dangerous?

No. You are responsible for your own life and you are driving the decision-making. You are taking action, not the Coach. The Coach's role is to provide support through that process and offer tools for introspection. Coaches clients to think outside of the box, but it is up to you to decide what you are comfortable with.

If you ever have negative feelings after a coaching session a Life Coach, let them know immediately! Miscommunication can happen. And, face it, not every Life Coach is going to be compatible with every client. We want you to walk away from our time with me feeling positive and ready to act. We want you to feel good!

Is Life Coaching confidential?

Life Coaching is 100% confidential. We adhere to a code of ethics set forth by the International Coach Federation.

Will I become dependent on Life Coaching and stop thinking for myself?

No. Life Coaches never make decisions for their clients or tell their clients what to do. Coaches do not cure nor treat.  Coaches ask you questions about your dreams and goals so you can learn more about yourself and where you want to be. You will be making choices for yourself.

Shouldn't I be able to reach my goals on my own?

Anyone can reach their goals on their own. But are you? If you are, what are you sacrificing to do so? Your health? Time with friends or family? Your relationships? Coaches believe that you can have everything you want in life. It simply takes planning and taking action. It might not happen RIGHT NOW. But it can happen.

With a Coach by your side, you will work together to find ways to meet your goals without the sacrifice. Yes, you will have to make some changes. If you have read this far, it seems like you might be ready to do just that. We can help you figure out what areas have the most potential for change.

Using a Life Coach gives you the extra push, the extra edge you need to get started living the life you want. You will be amazed at how easy it is to live authentically when you apply some discipline and structure to just a few areas!

Is Life Coaching a fad?

I think a lot about Self Care and how it has become part of our every day conversation. In today's economy, doing things for ourselves just feels right... and taking care of ourselves should be at the top of that list. I view Life Coaching as a form of Self Care. Life Coaching is radical Self Care!

Are you tired of just living one day to the next? Would you rather be living a fulfilled life that is meaningful? Can you picture it? What does that life look like?

Recognizing the importance of taking control of our lives is not a fad. A trend... yes. But a trend that I believe will continue. Coaches are not a miracle workers, but we have a lot of tools to help you get from point A to point B.

Making yourself a priority and investing in yourself? A trend I will always follow.

Will I get results faster than if I were doing things on my own?

Oh yes! Hiring a Life Coach is hiring a personal cheerleader who knows how to structure your goals in achievable increments that get you results faster. The more you see results, the more excited you will be to move on to the next action step!

When we set out on our own to reach a goal, we don't always have a clear vision of what that goal is, realistic steps to follow to reach that goal, or a plan B for when things go horribly awry. Coaches help you see your goal with crystal clear vision and create specific, measurable objectives that will get you there efficiently. If something goes wrong along the way, rather than stumbling along alone and losing momentum, your Coach will be there to quickly help you redirect your energy!

What does a typical client focus on?

There is no typical clients. Each client has their own individual goal, path, strengths, weaknesses, and ideas about life. A lot of the work we do asks you to look inward... to really look at who you are and where you want your life to go. Coaches have clients do a lot of self-assessments and there will be homework. But it is not pointless drudgery, and you get out of Life Coaching what you put into it.
